Sensory needs can play such a huge role in supporting the emotional regulation of children and young people. If we are not able to effectively understand and support their sensory needs, this can result in children and young people becoming emotionally dysregulated. The best way to look at this is by considering an emotional cup, that throughout the day is constantly becoming filled with all the things that are depleting throughout the day. To support that cup in not over-flowing, we need to consider things that might be enriching, to help bring the level in the cup back down, to avoid it overflowing and resulting in an emotional outburst. One example of how we could look at this is considering any areas of under-sensitivity and then exploring activities that might help to provide sensory feedback in this area.
